We explore how local cultures and creative use of urban space can make a difference.
Helsinki Beyond Dreams is an inspiring book that observes new perspectives on a city in transition. Learn how new social innovations and self-initiated activities can make cities more open, participatory, green and enjoyable.
Nordic people enjoy the tradition of everyman’s right to roam nature. Helsinki citizens have translated this instinctive relationship into a new DIY urbanism. Neighborhoods organize traditional dances in parks, disused rail yards have been taken over by guerrilla gardeners, and friends open new restaurants for a day.
Right now, Helsinki is undergoing major urban transformations: formerly inaccessible harbors, dockyards and railway tunnels have been opened up to the public. Such as yet undefined spaces inspire people to try out new ideas and actions in the urban environment.
Included are ideas from Helsinki that can be interpreted and applied worldwide. Through inspiring stories and high quality photography, Helsinki Beyond Dreams aims to encourage creative citizens and planners to develop better cities together.
The book is edited and compiled by Hella Hernberg and it will be published by Urban Dream Management in March-April 2012.
