How can design improve the world? Finnish design professionals have created innovative operating models to support the activities of local organisations in African and Asian countries.
These and the opportunities of community design in Finland will be presented at exhibitions and events in the Helinä Rautavaara Museum in 2012.
Lost in Katutura: The stories resulting from the meetings of Finnish designers and residents of the Katutura district in Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek illustrate the opportunities and challenges of post-colonial Africa.
In the countryside or in the city?: The ethically and aesthetically high quality handmade products produced by Tikau in India support the expertise of small producers.
The adventures of the stubborn jackal: Located in the Senegalese capital of Dakar, the RIAC (Reseau d´Insertion des Artistes, Artisans Chômeurs/Network to Promote Artists, Artisans and Unemployed) cultural centre gives young people a chance to train and use visual expression to work with current themes in co-operation with professionals.
Ukumbi ry strives to use architectural means to offer organisations opportunities for development. Ukumbi’s partner in the learning centre project is a Cairo-based civic organisation called The Association for the Protection of the Environment (A.P.E) that works to improve the living conditions of Cairo's informal garbage collectors, also known as the zabbaleen. A second goal is to increase respect for and the competences of these masters of recycling.
During the year, the Helinä Rautavaara Museum will also arrange community design workshops and other events. The exhibitions and events during the theme year provide a window on the phenomena of a globalising world from the viewpoint of responsibility and fairness.
