The British lifestyle magazine Monocle assessed the good connections at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport to be the best in Europe.
In addition to the good network of destinations at Helsinki-Vantaa, Monocle praises the airport's human scale, sensible use of materials, and shops full of Finnish products. The airport has made it to the magazine's list of medallists for the third time already. Previously, the airport has been selected as the best airport for connections in the world in 2010, and as the best airport in 2009.
The Helsinki-Vantaa airport is the biggest airport in Finland, and the leading long-haul airport in Northern Europe. Most of Finland's international traffic takes place through this airport. The airport is maintained by Finavia, one of the chief co-operation partners of the World Design Capital. About 20,000 people work in 1,500 companies at the airport, and a little under 13 million passengers travel through it every year.
Finavia continuously develops the services of the airport, which was built in time for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. In 2014, a direct Ring railway line to Helsinki-Vantaa will open and connect the northern main line and the western Martinlaakso lines.
This autumn, together with Finnair, the company flew quality controllers around the world, to help invent new ideas for improving air traffic, and has provided the public the opportunity to take part in the ideation. The best proposal will be selected based on the public vote which ended on 11 December.
- Amongst the proposals, there was. for example, a vegetarian day, air-plane karaoke, virtual chess, as well as speed dating at the airport - and we are going to process all these ideas, tells Johanna Metsälä, Finavia Customer Experience Manager.
