At a press conference today, we published our programme, which consists of some 250 projects. This is the most extensive design programme ever realised in Finland and one of the largest in the world.
The programme published today will be added to the website in three languages during the coming week. For the time being, you can see the programme here . The programme will also be supplemented with additional events through to the end of 2011.
Half of the published programme is comprised of various development projects, which deal with the 'Changing City' and 'New Solutions' themes. In projects under these theme headings the various forms of design will be used to an exceptionally broad extent.
Events geared toward citizens and tourists comprehend approximately one-third of all programme events. They are collected under the themes 'Year of Events' and 'Exhibitions'. The programme includes open cultural events and, for example, approximately one hundred exhibitions.
During the Design Capital year, design movers and shakers from all over the world will gather in Finland. Major events are in store for the entire year. Design will also take center stage in various Finnish and international publications.
Our goal is to develop the city through design. The purpose of the programme is to inspire us all to participate in improving our environment and demonstrating the possibilities of design in the promotion of welfare and competitiveness.
“The Design Capital is all about making a better city. Above all, our goal is to make a permanent impact. This is more than a year of events or a festival – we want to make the role of design visible," says Pekka Timonen, Executive Director of World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.
Our programme has been primarily assembled through an open call for projects. The number of participants is extraordinarily broad: from design professionals to preschoolers, officials to NGOs, and companies to students. Projects will be realised in all five of the participating cities.
The Design Capital budget is EUR 16 million. The self-funding of projects is estimated to be over EUR 50 million.
