Night of the Arts fills the city with togetherness and inspiration

Held on Friday 26 August as part of the Helsinki Festival, the Night of the Arts offers free activities all over the city – also including design.

The programme is traditionally located in museums, galleries, bookstores, theatres, cultural centres and art shops, but now extends to marketplaces, parks and the streets.

An installation that examines the changing urban environment makes the oldest houses in Helsinki part of the modern city look on Katariinankatu. Electrical cabinets serve as exhibition spaces for modern visual art in the Töölö and Kallio districts. The container exhibition at Narinkkatori Square allows people to learn more about Helsinki’s seafront suburbs.

The Reuse Centre provides the chance to consider the lifecycle of products by designing unique jewellery from junk and participating in the construction of a community work of art.  Shops in the Design District in Punavuori are arranging a bazaar and a charity auction, the proceeds of which will go to art education for children and young people.

The classic names of Finnish design also have a role in the programme. The Design Museum offers a performance and guided tours in the visual language of Kaj Franck.  Pastry and toy workshops with a Franck theme will delight the public during the evening.

A natural destination for fans of fashion and urban culture is the sibilant windbreaker disco in Itä-Pasila, where the programme includes Finnish disco and rap music as well as a children’s programme, Nordic walking dance and hip hop performances.

There’s plenty to see and do all over the city, and the best way to get more information is by using the new mobile application. Let’s invite art to spend the night!
