Lahti

Lahti, located on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, is a major centre of industrial design. Design is an important competitive factor for the businesses in the region.

The local design competence is proof of the region’s long-standing industrial traditions, of the integration of education, research and business in Finland, and of the international presence of young designers from the area. The Institute of Design at Lahti University of Applied Sciences is one of Finland’s leading design schools.

In addition, Lahti is known as an active centre for sports and culture. The Sports Centre in the middle of the city is a world-renowned arena for winter sports. The internationally acclaimed Lahti Symphony Orchestra has its home in the fabulous wooden concert hall of Sibelius Hall. A unique Wood Architecture Park is currently under construction close to the harbour and Sibelius Hall.

Lahti is also one of Finland’s main hubs for environmental business activity. Research into renewable energies is being conducted in the region and sustainable development is an important part of the urban strategy.

During its term as the World Design Capital, Lahti will offer a broad palette of events related to design phenomena, showcasing local designers.  The Lahti World Design Capital initiative is funded by the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme with assistance from the European Regional Development Fund.
