Two Finnish jewellery designers, Heli Kauhanen and Essi Sikanen, share methods and views about their art. The designers have combined forces to set up an exhibition, titled Impressions of Sensitivity, on display at Design Forum Finland.
Both designers go to nature for inspiration and motifs, as many Finnish designers have done before them. They collect motifs from their surroundings by photographing interesting elements of nature. Kauhanen photographs ice formations, snow, clouds and vegetation; Sikanen does the same, focusing on ice crystals, berries, grass and blossoms. They interpret the forms in the context of jewellery, blending goldsmith traditions with art and design.
Kauhanen and Sikanen also share educational background and current occupations. Both have studied at two leading design institutions in Finland: the
Institute of Design in the Lahti University of Applied Sciences and the
Aalto University School of Art and Design (former University of Art and Design Helsinki). Both now teach at the Institute of Design.
At Design Forum Finland, they accompany their jewellery designs with photographs of the natural elements that have inspired those designs. The lighting design is by Jyrki Sinisalo.
