Architectural student Heikki Muntola has won first prize in the Helsinki Townhouse competition with his proposal titled [tabula rasa] by a unanimous vote of the jury.
According to the jury, the special merits of [tabula rasa] are its high variability according to tenant wishes and ease of application in pre-fabricated housing production.
“This highly refined proposal fulfills the goals of innovative housing development and high-level architecture,” sums up Pia Sjöroos, the secretary of the competition board.
Muntola is commissioned to develop [tabula rasa] further. His townhouse design can be applied at least in
Jätkäsaari and
Kruunuvuorenranta, two new Helsinki waterfront districts under development.
Jätkäsaari and Kruunuvuorenranta are among several new housing districts developed with townhouses. The Helsinki Townhouse competition provided new ideas to be used in the planning and development of the districts.
A total of 65 proposals were accepted for the competition, and the results were announced on June 22. The first prize is 40,000 euros. Heikki Muntola is a student at the Department of Architecture at the University of Oulu in Finland.
The winning proposals of the competition are on view at the Helsinki City Planning Department’s meeting and exhibition space
Laituri through August 6, 2010.
