Wooden reliefs by Ilona Rista combine art and functional interior decoration.
Her latest collection depicting Helsinki is on exhibit at Design Museum in
Helsinki.
Ilona Rista is a design artist from Helsinki who works with wood to create
reliefs with integrated acoustic properties and an interplay of light. Her
artworks offer new opportunities for interior designers and architects.
Absorption of background noise and voices by a wooden relief makes an
acoustic art wall.
Rista has completed a new collection of wooden reliefs on neighbourhoods of
Helsinki. These include Kruununhaka, Kallvik, East Pasila and the Central
Park. She says, “I think of my home town and make a collection of reliefs
in wood on the theme.”
She explains her process and goals: “How is a wall surface made to reflect
sound? The pattern is repeated; the size is altered; the motif is abstracted.
The goal is to make an aesthetically high-standard artwork for walls.”
