Events, competitions, guided tours, seminars and open lectures. Open doors and exhibitions. Workshops and ideation projects, as well as open data and ice lanterns.
This and much more will be on offer from 3 to 5 February in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti, when the WDC Helsinki 2012 Open Doors Weekend spills out into the streets and markets and fills the galleries of these cities. The very popular Restaurant Day, to be organised on Saturday 4 February, will add its own spice to the weekend.
Below a few city-specific tips for the WDC Helsinki 2012 Open Doors Weekend events.
In addition to Design District Helsinki and Annantalo Arts Centre, Senate Square and its surroundings will be one of the key locations for many of the events. Saturday, 4 February the Wonderwater Frozen Lights event to be organised at Senate Square invites all residents from babies to grannies to a joint ice lantern happening. Should the weather be below freezing, those attending can warm up at the WDC Helsinki 2012 studio facilities which are adjacent to Senate Square and where workshops will be organised from Friday to Sunday.
One of the places to visit in Espoo is the WeeGee Exhibition Centre which will open for numerous events and workshops during the WDC Helsinki 2012 Open Doors Weekend. During the weekend, WeeGee will also be the venue for the Espoo WDC Helsinki 2012 meeting place, the Design Espoo! exhibition.
The key meeting place in Vantaa will be Tikkurila where events will be organised at several venues including the Vantaa Design Window and the Finnish Science Centre Heureka. The WDC Helsinki 2012 Open Doors Weekend will also be in evidence at the airport where the weekend-long Rocking Chair Get-Together events will be celebrated.
Two events will be organised in Kauniainen during the WDC Helsinki 2012 Open Doors Weekend. On Friday, a workshop focusing on wellbeing and cultural services, organised by Aalto University, will be held at Kauniainen Town Hall from 13:00 to 16:00. On Saturday, the award-winning fashion artist Mai Niemi will introduce her Finnish Fairytale concept at her own studio from 10:00 to 16:00.
Lahti will offer bright, creative and happy as well as open and ecological events: for example, the Ekolandia exhibition will open on Friday at the Lahti City Museum. Taitokeskus Velma will offer an opportunity to get together as a family at non-stop workshops, and the meeting place Lahti Muotohuoltamo Centre will offer various events throughout the weekend.
