The year 2012 at the Museum of Technology focuses on technology design

The role of design in industry and technology will be highlighted in the Technology Museum’s WDC Helsinki 2012 exhibition series.

The Designed Technology – Glimpses into Technology and Design (Muotoiltua teknologiaa – kurkistuksia tekniikkaan ja designiin
) series includes glimpses into the museum’s core technology, forestry and chemical industry exhibitions from a design perspective, as well as other exhibitions which change from time to time.

The design perspective has been highlighted by including the smaller exhibitions Glimpses into Design (Kurkistuksia designiin) and
A Designer’s Path (Muotoilijan polku) produced in cooperation with the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, as part of the museum's core exhibitions.

Thematic design paths will be laid out for visitors to move between the various exhibitions, eras, processes and materials used.

Reflecting on the change in object culture via tool design

The first special exhibition Beyond Arm’s Length – Tool Technology (Kättä pidempää – työkalujen tekniikkaa) is a tribute to the long production tradition of Finnish tools. The exhibition opening on 1 February will display tools from the perspectives of their evolution, functionality and esthetics. It will showcase completely new ways of looking at tools and their various uses.

The exhibition will seek answers to the questions of what and how objects by their design speak to us of their particular purpose. It will enable us to think of time and change in Finnish object culture, industrial community and production processes.

Tools produced at the Fiskars and Billnäs ironworks – industrial designer Oliva Lindén’s unique collection and industrial designer Pekka Harni’s object categories – will form the main aspect of this exhibition based on the Tool (Työkalu) exhibition produced by the cooperative society of Fiskars artisans, designers and artists.

The Designed Technology guided tours

The WDC Helsinki 2012 guided tour Designed Technology (Muotoiltua teknologiaa) will be organised on the first Sunday of each month at 14:00 (from 4 March). The guided tour will introduce the museum’s core exhibitions from the perspective of design. The duration of the tour will be approximately one hour, the cost of which is included in the entry fee.

Industrial designer Olavi Lindén is present to introduce his collection during the WDC Helsinki Open Doors Weekend Sunday, 5 February at 1.30 pm.
