Freedom, the world of dreams and design to meet in Hämeenlinna

The Dreaming of Light exhibition will showcase Jukka Korpihete’s diverse production.

The various shapes of light and shadow play a key role in the design work of artist Jukka Korpihete. During his career, Korpihete who received the prestigious Ilmari Tapiovaara award last year has designed numerous luminaires, pieces of furniture and silver objects.

In addition to the opportunity to view the award-winning objects, visitors to the exhibition will be able to admire a light installation. The “State of Liberty” delves into the world of dreams, challenging the visitor to study both the concept of freedom and the possible significance of the world of dreams. There is a particular reason for viewing the work in Hämeenlinna as it was the dreams of the female prisoners from the local Vanaja prison that formed the basis for this artwork.

However, visitors will not have to view the lights in complete silence. The installation “Jyväskylä Light Trilogy” also being displayed combines light with sound.

The exhibition in Hämeenlinna is a continuation of the Korpihete exhibition first displayed in Japan, at the Tokio Ozone design centre. The exhibition was praised for its Nordic clarity and unprejudiced work with light and shadows.

The Jukka Korpihete – Dreaming of Light exhibition is to be displayed at the Hämeenlinna Art Museum from 28 January to 9 April 2012.
