Design 2012 Magazine Tells Stories of Helsinki WDC 2012

What is the designer’s responsibility in 2012? What does the word design mean? Why is design thinking important to everyone in all parts of the world? What happens when design meets government? Why are roof gardens beneficial? How much water does it take to make one pint of beer? What is the importance of open data? What is the relationship between a person and an object?

These are some of the questions explored in Design 2012 which comes out on Friday 27 January. Published in Finnish and Swedish, this one-off magazine offers a broad selection of articles to explain what Helsinki WDC 2012 is all about.

ENVIRONMENT, WELL-BEING, RESPONSIBILITY AND GROWTH

The magazine has 84 pages, and the content is divided into four themes: environment, well-being, responsibility, growth. In addition to urban agriculture, the environment section explores how the urban structures of cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti will be reshaped in the future. In the well-being section, the main article probes a fundamental question: How can design improve well-being for all of us - in our lives at home, in the workplace, and at leisure?  The section on responsibility puts the spotlight on Finnish designers who work in Asia, Africa and South America in addition to their home country. The final section covers the topic of growth and introduces some of the figures behind the 300 projects of Helsinki WDC 2012.
